Scarecrow contest becomes tradition in Branchville

After a highly successful debut last fall, the borough's scarecrow contest has returned, and residents have been hard at work finalizing their creations for the contest next weekend. Both residential homes and commercial buildings are eligible to enter the contest, in which participants place a scarecrow with a pumpkin for a head on their property in celebration of Halloween.

The temptation in a story like this is to point out the rural small towns of New Jersey to dispel the notion of the industrial-smokestack and strip-mall-sameness reputation of the state. But feigning surprise at the existence of towns such as Branchville is fanning ignorance.

Circus gives back to county nonprofits with free performance

After making Sussex County its home for the past several weeks, the Big Apple Circus showed its appreciation for the area by treating several local non-profit organizations to a free preview show as part of a "Fair Community Evening" at the Sussex County Fairgrounds Thursday. The performance served as a precursor to the upcoming shows in which general admission tickets are available to the public for $10, plus a $5 parking fee, on a first-come, first-served basis.
