What to Expect from Your Certified Irrigation Specialist

For those living in seasonal conditions or regions with extremely low temperatures, winterizing your lawn sprinklers is a must. A certified irrigation specialist will make sure that your entire system is winterized, blown out, and shut down at the end of the season, preventing any weather-related damage from occurring. As trained lawn care experts, our technicians utilize specialized equipment that’s regulated to deliver the precise amount of compressed air (based on the manufacturers specifications) to correctly remove any residual water that exists in the systems’ main lines, lateral lines, manifold, and solenoid valves. After each service, you can expect a fully functioning lawn sprinkler system, with the sprinkler heads, solenoid valves, and piping avoiding any compromises from excess pressure or friction by an improperly regulated air compressor.

Our technician will work through each individual zone, forcing out all residual water and ensuring each line has been winterized.

Frequently Asked Questions for Sprinkler Winterizations:

What is a lawn sprinkler winterization?

  • The definition of a lawn sprinkler winterization (also known as a shutdown, sprinkler blow out, drip irrigation shut down, garden irrigation turn off, and sprinkler closing) is the process of removing all water from the pipes, backflow preventer, sprinkler heads, and fittings in your irrigation system with a regulated air compressor. This process will help to ensure the colder temperatures do not cause the irrigation components or piping to expand, freeze, or crack, leading to extensive damage.

When is the best time to winterize my lawn sprinkler system?

  • October 1st thru December 15th (depending on your region) is usually the best time to schedule the winterization of your irrigation system. Winterizing your system during this time frame is optimal because you want to winterize your sprinkler system BEFORE we experience several days of freezing cold temperatures, specifically below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Why should I winterize my sprinkler system?

  • When temperatures drop below freezing, the water left inside in your sprinkler irrigation lines can freeze and cause extensive damage. The winterizing process will help to assure that the coming winter and freezing temperatures do not damage or compromise your sprinkler system’s components and piping.

Can I winterize my sprinkler system myself?

  • We do not recommend homeowners to winterize their own sprinkler system because just turning off the water valve is NOT enough. Even if you drained the water out of your irrigation system, some water will remain and can freeze, expand, and crack the components and piping. A specialized air compressor will deliver the precise amount of compressed air to correctly remove the residual water in all of the systems’ main lines, lateral lines, manifold and solenoid valves. If an improperly regulated air compressor is used, you can compromise the sprinkler heads, solenoid valves, backflow preventer and piping from excess air pressure or friction.

How do you winterize a sprinkler system?

  • In order to winterize an irrigation system, you first have to shut down all of the irrigation water supply sources and leave the clock in the “rest” position. Next, a specially regulated air compressor will be attached to the irrigation system and the system will be charged with the proper amount of forced air. The technician will work through each individual zone completely forcing out all the residual water in the main lines and lateral lines. A light mist will be emitted from the sprinkler heads. This is a sign that your irrigation lines have been properly winterized.

What will happen to my sprinkler system if I do not winterize?

  • If a lawn sprinkler system is not professionally winterized, there will be water left in the main lines. This means when the weather gets colder, the remaining water in the lines will freeze and the components and pipes can crack and can cause major issues. Substantial damage to the irrigation system can result and will be evident the following season when the sprinkler system is started up again.

How much is a lawn sprinkler winterization?

  • The price of a lawn sprinkler winterization varies based on the size of the system and the system’s components – how many water supplies the system has, if there are additional lines such as a dock line or outdoor sink, etc. The standard winterization costs approximately $70 - $150 and increase based on the number of zones in the irrigation system and additional lines, if applicable.
